I was walking from 3oth street station in Philadelphia, to the trolley station. I had a moment to glance at the side walk and guess what I found? A flock of small birds eating grains. They looked like they were beauifully wraped in a green silk cloth studded with jewels. The bright sun adds to the sheen of their feathers. I can never forget that sight.I went to the lab, browsed the net and searched for birds in Pennsylvania. I came across this website www.enature.com. You could type in the zip code and it gives back all the birds in that area, including those that would migrate into that arae and their time periods of migration. It has a lot of information about birds and all wild life. It was just stunning.
I found out that these birds that I saw at the station were none other than Eastern Starlings! You see them almost everywhere. I was surprised that I had not noticed them in so many years. Its a very common bird of north east America. One interesting fact about these birds that I read somewhere was that one American businessman , decided to bring all the birds mentioned in Shakesphere's works to America. So, he got some of these starlings from Europe and left them in central park in New York. All the starlings that we see around are the descendants of those early birds that were brought here.
